Starting a Creative Brand Without a Big Budget

When people discover everything I create today, they often assume I had a big budget from the beginning.
The reality couldn't be more different.
I started my creative journey in 2016 with a very old laptop and a simple blog built on Wix. It wasn't fancy, and I certainly didn't have every tool I wanted. But it gave me a place to create, learn, and share my work with the world.
Looking back, I'm glad I didn't wait until everything was "perfect."
I simply started.
Growing One Step at a Time
As my skills improved and my creative interests expanded, my website eventually outgrew what I needed from Wix.
That's when I made the leap to a self-hosted WordPress website and created abbyjuli.com.
It wasn't because I wanted the newest platform—it was because my brand had grown enough that it needed more flexibility and room to evolve.
That experience taught me an important lesson:
Upgrade because you've outgrown something—not because you feel pressured to have the newest tools.
Let Your Brand Evolve Naturally
Over time, I realized one website couldn't hold every creative idea I had.
As my interests expanded, so did my online spaces.
I created abbyjulidiaries.com as a place for more personal reflections, mental health, creativity, and everyday life. Rather than trying to fit everything into one website, I gave each space its own purpose while keeping them connected under my overall creative brand.
Finding My Purpose
When I first started creating, I didn't have everything figured out.
Like many creators, I experimented with different ideas, explored different creative paths, and learned new skills along the way.
As time went on, one passion kept pulling me back—mental health.
I began sharing more of my own journey with anxiety, creativity, and finding comfort in everyday life. I realized I wanted my work to do more than look nice—I wanted it to help people feel seen, understood, and a little less alone.
That led me to create something I call Reflections on abbyjulidiaries.com.
Each Reflection pairs one of my original photo collages with thoughtful quotes and personal writing. They're quiet moments of encouragement, reminders to slow down, and honest reflections about mental health, creativity, healing, and life as it really is.
Looking back, I realize my creative brand wasn't just growing—it was becoming more authentic.
Starting App Development
Eventually, my passion for creating comforting digital spaces led me into app development.
Like many beginners, I didn't jump straight into professional coding.
I started with Thunkable, which gave me the confidence to learn how apps worked without needing years of programming experience.
As my ideas became bigger and I wanted more creative freedom, I made the decision to learn Flutter.
Today I'm building apps through Cozy Critter Studio, creating projects focused on emotional wellness, creativity, and gentle support for people navigating everyday life.
Just like every other step in my journey, I didn't start with the most advanced tools.
I started with what I had and upgraded when I was ready.
You Don't Need Everything on Day One
It's easy to believe you need the newest computer, expensive software, or every subscription before you can call yourself a creator.
My experience has been the opposite.
Almost every upgrade I've made happened because my work naturally reached a point where I needed more—not because I wanted to keep up with everyone else.
Every new tool came after growth, not before it.
The Biggest Investment Was Learning
The most valuable thing I invested in wasn't my laptop or my software.
It was my willingness to keep learning.
Every tutorial.
Every mistake.
Every redesign.
Every blog post.
Every website update.
Every app prototype.
Every project taught me something new.
Those small lessons added up over time.
Progress Creates Opportunity
Looking back over the years, I realize none of this happened overnight.
A simple Wix blog eventually became a self-hosted WordPress website.
One website became several, each serving a different purpose.
Learning graphic design led to photography.
Photography led to writing.
Writing led to sharing my mental health journey.
That journey eventually led to creating wellness apps.
Each chapter naturally opened the door to the next.
Final Thoughts
If you're starting your own creative journey, don't let your budget stop you.
Start with what you have.
Learn as you go.
Upgrade when it makes sense.
You don't need a perfect setup to build something meaningful.
I started with an old laptop and a simple Wix blog in 2016.
Since then, that small beginning has grown into multiple websites, a personal brand centered around creativity and mental health, a collection of Reflections that pair my photography with words of encouragement, and an exciting journey into app development through Cozy Critter Studio.
I didn't build my creative brand by having the best equipment.
I built it by staying curious, continuing to learn, embracing change, and creating things that reflected who I was becoming.
You never know where today's small step might lead tomorrow.
